The second EP in Gradient Echo’s Synthetic Textures series is a much darker, and cohesive, set of tracks than his first outing. By introducing field recordings and found sounds into the work flow the album blossoms from the first EP’s claustrophobic sound, and fills every space with a blend of micro-tonal synths and pitch shifted recordings. The vastness of the new EP is felt tenfold on “Utter Fucking Despair” with its broken record loop being pummelled by a growling, fuzzed-out, synth line, which breaks apart at the seams like the last hope of a sailor lost at sea.

“The new EP is a lot more of a cohesive statement than the last one I feel. I’ve always had a bit of an obsession with the ocean and submarines especially. The size, the isolation, and the danger of being at sea, and that’s definitely subconsciously fed into these recordings. The whole thing feels like an ode to the sea; and the life I might have lived if things had gone differently.
